A brilliant plastic surgeon , haunted by past tragedies, creates a type of synthetic skin that withstands any kind of damage. His guinea pig: a mysterious and volatile woman who holds the key to his obsession. The film is set in Toledo, Spain. In 2012, surgeon Robert Ledgard has succeeded in cultivating artificial skin resistant to burns and insect bites, which he says he’s been testing on athymic mice. At his estate, which also serves as a facility for medical research and operations, there are no mice in sight but he appears to be holding a young woman named Vera captive, using a dumbwaiter to provide her with supplies and monitoring her via closed-circuit television. Robert does so with the help of his servant Marilla.
It is carnival season; while Robert is away, Marilla’s son Zeca, having committed a robbery, arrives in carnival costume as a tiger to ask his mother to hide him for a few days. He learns of the female captive. When Marilla refuses to hide him or grant him access to the captive, he binds and gags Marilia, reaches the captive, and rapes her. Robert arrives and kills Zeca.
Marilla discloses that she is mother to both Zeca and Robert by different men, a fact she has not shared with them. To explain what motivates Robert’s experiments on the captive, she explains that Robert’s wife, Gal, was burned in a car crash twelve years earlier. When she saw what she looked like after the accident, “a cinder,” she jumped from a window to her death. Their daughter Norma witnessed the suicide and required psychiatric treatment thereafter. Marilla’s story segues into a flashback.
